2013 Canadian Marfan Association International Scientific Meeting: Marfan Syndrome and the Classification of Heritable Thoracic Aortic Disorders (HTAD)

On June 22 to 26, the Canadian Marfan Association hosted an International Scientific meeting in Tuscany, Italy sponsored by The Temerty Family Foundation. Over the last several years, research advancements have brought the emergence of new genetic mutations which predispose individuals to aortic aneurysms and dissections. For this reason, the CMA has expanded it’s scope and is dedicated to serving the overlapping populations of individuals Marfan syndrome and heritable thoracic aortic disorders (HTAD) in Canada.

The objective of this meeting was to develop a classification for HTAD and Marfan syndrome in order to provide accurate diagnosis for patients while consequently resulting in better treatment and management outcomes. The conference brought together international researchers and clinicians to develop treatment guidelines and establish an international genetic consortium.

We are proud to announce the formation of the Montalcino Aortic Consortium, composed of those specialists and researchers present at this meeting, that have committed to work together, collaborate, bring together data, ensuring research moves forward at a faster pace and is further translated to patient care. The working group will invite esteemed colleagues in their fields to join the Montalcino Aortic Consortium at the first post meeting in fall 2013.

This meeting was hosted by the Canadian Marfan Association and funded through a grant by The Temerty Family Foundation and sponsorship by Casa Raia.
